Hey there! It seems that the recent test Google conducted on the Search Generative Experience (SGE) AI-generated snapshot answers is over. Initially, Google was displaying links and citations in these answers. However, they have now removed them.
During the test, there were three different formats for links in the SGE answers. You can have a look at the screenshots below to see how they appeared:
Now, the SGE answers no longer contain any links. This change was noticed by those who were part of the test, including myself and Danny Goodwin, Managing Editor of Search Engine Land. The links have completely vanished from Google’s AI-generated responses since yesterday afternoon.
Here are a few other individuals who have also reported the absence of links:
- Britney Muller

The removal of links from SGE answers has sparked concerns among users. Many believe that having links in these generative answers adds more value to the user experience. It allows users to easily access the source of the information mentioned in the AI-generated answer. Hopefully, Google will consider reintroducing links to these generative AI answers in the future, as it would enhance the overall usability of the feature. However, for now, Google has put an end to this particular test.
Postscript: In response to user queries, Google’s Search Liaison tweeted that they have not eliminated corroborating links. The carousel with links still exists, and users can access them by clicking the menu icon. Google is actively experimenting with different formats and will continue to make changes based on the results of these tests.
