Google takes a stand against third-party booking providers dominating GBP listings

Google takes a stand against third party booking providers dominating GBP

‘Revolutionary Update: Google’s New Rules for Third-Party Applications Provides Better Control to Merchants’

Google’s recent mandate delivers a shift in how third-party service providers interact with Google Business Profiles (GBPs), empowering businesses more than ever before. The new regulation insists on third-party providers having a designated opt-out page within the New Merchant Experience (NMX) dashboard. This move is a significant win for merchants, allowing them to easily disconnect their GBP from various applications such as booking, waitlist, or food ordering.

‘A New Era of Merchant Autonomy on Google Business Profiles’

Prior to this policy change, third-party providers maintained an overarching control on GBPs. This often left business owners clueless about how to remove unwanted integrations from their profiles. Seeking support from Google only pointed to contacting the service provider directly, creating confusion and frustration for the merchants.

‘Step-by-Step Guide to Disconnecting Third-Party Providers’

The NMX dashboard now simplifies the process of disconnecting a service provider from a GBP. By selecting ‘Food Ordering’, users can choose the provider they wish to sever ties with and then click on the ‘Remove Provider’ option. This straightforward process signifies a severe enhancement of user control compared to previous systems.

‘A Closer Look at Managing Providers’

The ‘remove provider’ link is directly provided by the third-party integration. Note that these URLs cannot be edited or removed unless manually added. Instead, each provider offers a landing page outlining how to disable the integration, thereby promoting clarity and transparency for merchants. Depending on the provider, this information may be presented as a step-by-step guide, form, or a direct link to their support team.

‘Should You Declutter Your Online Options?’

Some brands find that excessive options on their food ordering pages can lead to confusion and affect user experience. With the existence of multiple platforms such as DoorDash, Caviar, GrubHub, Seamless, Eat24, and Tapingo, the choice for customers can seem overwhelming. This recent policy update by Google obliges providers to offer easy exit routes for any service that merchants wish to abstain from, providing an excellent opportunity to streamline their online ordering and booking systems.

‘A Quantum Leap in Transparency for Merchants’

This policy alteration is positively received as DoorDash implemented a Google Form that allows businesses to customize their offerings across different outlets, with opt-out options for DoorDash, Caviar, or both. This major shift has empowered business owners with greater transparency, possibly reducing the number of third-party removal requests landing on Google’s support desk.

‘Navigating Third-Party Integrations: Affect on Google Business Profile Performance Metrics’

Merchants must deliberate on the pros and cons before deciding to disconnect from third-party providers. While third-party integrations can clutter a profile, they also contribute significantly to the overall performance metrics of a GBP. Any interaction on a business’s GBP adds to their performance statistics. However, customer actions redirected to external sites from third-party links aren’t accounted for. Therefore, merchants need to thoroughly consider their strategies and decide what works best for their businesses and customers in the long term.
