Google Adds Support for Site Names on Subdomains for Mobile Search Results
Google recently announced that it now supports Site names for subdomains on mobile devices. Site names refer to the title and name of the site displayed in the search result listings. Google updated its help documentation to specify subdomains on mobile, and it uses several methods to identify the site name for the search result. You can also use structured data on your home page to communicate to Google what the site name should be for your site.
Site names for the domain level were introduced for mobile search results in English, French, German, and Japanese in October 2022. Site names were also added for desktop for the same set of languages in April 2023 and now supported on the subdomain level for the same languages on mobile search results only since May 2023.
Now that site names will potentially show a different name for subdomains on mobile devices, make sure to test how Google displays your site name for your subdomains on mobile, for multiple queries. Google offers support threads in its forums and documentation on Site name structured data and best practices for favicons.
