Google’s 2023 Algorithm and Search Engine Updates: A Comprehensive Round-Up

During 2023, Google rolled out nine significant algorithm updates, along with launching a revolutionary AI search engine, known as the Search Generative Experience. This launch came after 10 previous algorithmic updates in both 2021 and 2022. This comprehensive round-up provides you with a detailed timeline and recap of Google’s search algorithm developments throughout 2023.

The Unveiling of Google’s Algorithm Updates for 2023

The confirmed Google algorithm updates for 2023 were one less than the previous two years, making a total of nine. These updates are illustrated and recapped for your convenience in this year-long timeline.

The Big Four: Core Algorithm Updates in 2023

In 2023, Google unveiled a total of four major core updates. This was a significant increase from the two that were made in 2022. The core updates were unveiled in March, August, October, and November.

    | Update | Link to Update | Roll-out Start | Roll-out Duration | Roll-out Completion | Volatility Compared to Previous Updates |
    |———–|——————-|—————–|———————-|———————–|———————————————|
    | March 2023 Core Update | Link | March 15 | 13 days | March 28 | Similar to previous updates |
    | August 2023 Core Update | Link | August 22 | 16 days | September 7 | Lower than previous updates |
    | October 2023 Core Update | Link | October 5 | 14 days | October 19 | High – overlapped with Spam Update |
    | November 2023 Core Update | Link | November 2 | 26 days | November 28 | Higher than October core and spam updates |

Transformation of Product Reviews Update into Reviews Update

The ‘Product Reviews Update’ was renamed ‘Reviews Update’ by Google in 2023. This was done to illustrate Google’s further considerations of not only product-related reviews but all kinds of review-related content. Google confirmed three reviews updates last year.

‘Helpful Content Update’ – A Major Shake-Up in the SEO world

Though there was only a single ‘Helpful Content Update’ in 2023, it made a significant impact on the industry. SEO experts are still discussing the effects of this major update on their businesses and clientele.

    An In-between Spam Update

In midst of these updates, Google also incorporated a ‘Spam Update’ in 2023. This was primarily to purge search results of several types of spam, particularly in languages such as Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Hindi, and Chinese.

Other Google Search Algorithm Updates in 2023

Google made several other important changes and updates throughout 2023. These include a Topic Authority System, updates to reward Hidden Gems, Local Search Ranking adjustments to strengthen the openness signal, fixes to a bug affecting Discover related traffic and updates to the Language Matching system.

In addition, Google also made alterations to the search quality raters guidelines in November to focus more on user intent. Finally, they revamped their ranking updates page for better tracking of updates.
