Google recently experienced some issues with indexing and serving new content in Google Search. The problem started around 1:30 p.m. ET, but has since been resolved. Google’s Search Liaison Danny Sullivan acknowledged the reports and assured that they were looking into it.
Shortly after, Google confirmed the indexing issue and stated that they were working on identifying the root cause. They provided a link to the Google Search Status Dashboard where users could monitor the progress. The Wall Street Journal’s Director of Newsroom SEO, Edward Hyatt, also mentioned that there was a drop in content indexing during the same timeframe.
While some content continued to be indexed and served by Google Search, there were still difficulties with new URLs. The site command search query showed mixed results with newer content appearing and disappearing intermittently. This issue seemed to affect other news sites as well.
If you have published new content after 2 p.m. ET, there’s a possibility that your traffic from Google Search might be impacted. The extent of the issue and its impact on publishers is still unclear.
Google has since resolved the problem and confirmed that it was an indexing issue with new content.
