Google Removes Page Experience and Other Ranking Systems: What’s Going On?
Google recently made some changes to its documented ranking systems page, and several page experience-related ranking systems were removed entirely. Some of the removed systems were the page experience system, the mobile-friendly system, the page speed system, and the secure site system. However, it’s unclear whether these algorithm updates ever had any impact on the Google ranking system.
Comparing the old archived page to the current page reveals the removal of all four ranking systems without moving the page experience system to the “retired” systems section. Also, Google has removed the mobile-friendly, page speed, and secure site systems from the retired section of the page.
The recent changes make one wonder whether page experience, speed, and mobile-friendliness even mattered at all to the overall Google ranking system. Google’s recent revision of helpful content guidance also included page experience, while also removing the page experience report and the mobile usability report from Google Search Console.
In a blog post explaining these changes, Google wrote, “The page experience update was a concept to describe a set of key page experience aspects for site owners to focus on.”
It seems Google is outright saying that this page experience update was always just a concept and was never a separate ranking system. We all know that those four ranking updates had little to no impact on true rankings. Google even wrote, “Google Search always seeks to show the most relevant content, even if the page experience is sub-par.”
